The Winter Cup 2024
The handicap tournament is a fun competition for all members to join in, and have competitive matches whatever
their tennis experience and level. The matches often produce results you may not expect – it is all part of the fun.
Tournament Rules;
- Each pair will be given a Handicap of 0 – 7. 0 Being the stronger, more experienced pair.
- Before each match, work out the difference in yours and the opposing pairs handicap (subtract the lower
number form the higher number!). - Look at the handicap table below to see the starting score in each game (the pair with the higher number
handicap will start up in the game). - Play your match as follows: Best of 3 sets, each set is first to 6 games with no tie breaks, if any set gets to 6
games all, play to 8, if it gets to 8 games all, it is next game wins the set!
(We will look at the handicaps after the group stage and might re set them if needed)
Tournament Format;
- 4 groups, of 5 or 6 pairs,
- Each pair must play each pair within their own group, in any order, using the above scoring,
- The pair who wins the most matches, wins the group and progresses to finals day on the 19th April,
- If multiple pairs have the same number of wins, it will be decided by sets one/lost, then games won/lost,
- Please try your best to complete all matches by the 12th April!
- Matches can only be played in off peak times – before 5pm weekdays, and weekends after 1pm
- Finals day will be semi-finals and finals, with matches being best of 3 sets with a match tie break at 1 set all.

| 1 | Alternate 15 - 0 and 0 – 0 every other game |
| 2 | 15 – 0 |
| 3 | Alternate 30 – 0 and 15 - 0 every other game |
| 4 | 30 – 0 |
| 5 | Alternate 40 - 0 and 30 – minus 15 every other game |
| 6 | 40 – 0 |
Example 1; Pair A v Pair B
- Pair A have a handicap of 4 and Pair B have a handicap of 2
- The difference in handicap is 2
- Pair A (higher handicap) start every game 15 – 0 up.
Example 2; Pair C v Pair D
- Pair C have a handicap of 2 and pair D have a handicap of 5
- The difference in handicap is 3
- Pair D (higher handicap) start the first game 30 – 0 up, and the next game 15 – 0 up, and keep alternating start score through
the match.
